 ANDROCLES AND THE LION

A long time ago, people kept slaves. These were servants who had to work without being paid. One such slaves, was called Androcles. He was so badly treated by his master that he ran away to the forest. As he was walking along, he saw a lion. He was about to run away when he saw that the lion was not going to attack him. It seemed to be in pain. Androcles walked up to it. The lion held out its paw to him.

“I think the poor beat is hurt,” said Androcles to himself.  “Let me see if I can help it.” So he gently held the paw with both hands. He soon saw that the paw was swollen and bleeding as there was a big thorn in it. Gently, Androcles pulled it out.
The lion licked him as if to say, “Thank You”. Then it walked away. It was no longer in pain.

A few days later Androcles was caught by the king’s men and taken back.  “A run away slave!” cried the king. “As a punishment he must fight a wild animal.”   So a huge lion that had just been caught was got ready. It was not given food or water for three days so that it became hungry and angry.

On the day of the fight, the arena was filled with people. Androcles was led to the arena and the lion let loose after him. The people watched fearfully. They were sure the lion would tear the slave to pieces. The lion let out a mighty road and rushed towards Androcles. But when it got close, it stopped. It began to lick Androcles’ hand and then rolled over his feet like a great, big cat.

How surprised the people were! Never had they seen such a sight ! They began to cheer. The king called Androcles. When he heard the story, he said, “Such a good, kind and brave man deserves to be free. So Androcles was released and the lion was set free in the forest.

Moral: Even animals don’t forget a good deed.
