Pandit Devacharya, a great scholar from Varnasi visited Vijaya Nagar. He presented himself before Krishna Devaraya. “I bring greetings to you from Varnasi Maharaja,” he said.
He was a proud man. Wherever he went people praised him. “It is a pleasure to have you among us, O’ learned one,” said the king. “Maharaja, I challenge the scholars of your court to debate with me on any subject of their choice,” said Pandit Devacharya. “Very well, we shall take up the challenge tomorrow in the court,” agreed Krishnadevaraya. After the Pandit had left, Krishnadevaraya looked towards Thathachariya., the Rajaguru and said,” “ I hope you don’t let us down.”
“Please forgive me, O king. But it is impossible to succeed with Devacharya in debate,” replied Thathachariya. Just then Tenali Rama stood up and said, “O’ king, I would like to take up the challenge.” The Rajguru became furious. “Rama, as the Rajguru is reluctant to take up the challenge, you may go ahead,” said the king.
The next day Devacharya arrived at the court, “Are you ready for the debate, Maharaja?” he asked as he bowed before the king. “Yes, the great scholar Rama will debate with you,” said the king. Rama stepped forward and took his seat opposite Devacharya.
There was a huge bundle next to Rama’s seat. “Which subject would you like to discuss on?” asked Devacharya. “Let us start with the simple Tilakashtha Mahisha Bandana of ….” started Rama. “What?” interrupted Devacharya. “I have not even heard of it.” “You have not even heard of it, but even cowherds in our kingdom know it?” replied a surprised Rama. “If cowherds know of what I haven’t heard of, Rama is sure to defeat me,” thought Devacharya. “O’ learned one, I accept defeat,” said Devacharya. humbly and withdrew from the court.
“Rama, please explain?” asked a curious king. “It is simple,” said Rama. He then opened the bundle before him and brought out some stalks.” These are the Tilakashtha stalks of sesame plants tied together with Mahisha Bandbana, the rope used to tie buffaloes,” explained Rama.
The king laughed and rewarded Rama handsomely. Rajguru Thathachariya who had also got fooled by Rama got very upset.
